Ben was able to join his sisters when they went to Joe’s Quinsigamond restaurant to meet with the manager, forty-year-old Matt Hanes. The man was blond, about five feet ten, husky, with a friendly manner.

Matt led the siblings to a corner table off the dining room where they could sit and chat more privately.

Ella said, “We’re sorry about Joe.”

Matt nodded with a serious expression on his face. “It was a shock to hear he’d been killed. But the shock you and your brother suffered was much worse, I’m sure. Pretty terrible all around.”

Ben cleared his throat. “Since we found the body, we’re spending time talking to people who knew Joe, trying to get a sense of him, trying to help the police catch the killer in any small way that we can. I haven’t been involved with many of the interviews that Ella and Livvy have conducted, but we talk almost every day and they’ve kept me in the loop.”

“I understand the feeling of wanting to help,” Matt told them. “I wish there was something I could do.”

“Can you tell us about Joe?” Livvy asked.

“Sure.” Matt straightened and swallowed hard. “I didn’t have much experience when I applied to work here in the kitchen. I’d been doing some supervision for a computer company for nearly ten years when I was laid off. I liked to cook and people enjoyed my food so I decided to make a career change. I waltzed in with no formal training and interviewed with Joe. He had a long talk with me. He told me I could work in the kitchen for minimum wage doing whatever the chef asked of me, or I could work as a host for a few months, and once I learned the ropes, Joe would move me into an assistant manager position. He told me what the pay would be and I jumped on it. I’m doing very well here.” Matt’s face fell. “I guess the restaurant will end up being sold so I’ll probably have to find another job. I don’t like the idea of changing, but that’s how it goes.”

“Do you know who inherited the restaurant?” Ella questioned.

“I don’t know. I understand there’s a sister, but we haven’t heard who the place belongs to now that Joe is gone.”

“Did you get along with Joe?” Ben asked.

“I sure did. Joe listened, he always tried to help if there was anything bothering any of us. He treated the employees with respect. He let us know how much he appreciated us. Not a lot of bosses do that sort of thing. I learned a lot from Joe about management and dealing with people. He was a generous person.”

“Did Joe spend a lot of time here?”

“He was here pretty frequently. This was his favorite out of all the restaurants he owned and it’s not far from his house on Poet’s Hill. Joe had real estate holdings, too, so during the day he was often busy with the real estate side of his businesses, but he was here a lot.
